  • Stay away from downed power lines. Call Jackson EMC immediately at 1-800-245-4044.
  • Contact Jackson EMC to report your power outage.
  • When possible, avoid using candles for lighting. Candles are a potential fire hazard.
  • Before a storm hits, ensure you have a storm kit in your home and vehicle with supplies that could be helpful during a prolonged power outage.
  • Prepare for medical needs, such as having a plan for loved ones who depend on medical equipment that requires electricity. This includes backup power, extra supplies or going to an alternative location until the storm is over.
  • Limit the use of your freezer and refrigerator during extended storm outages. Food will remain frozen for up to 48 hours if the doors remain closed and the unit is in good working condition.
  • In the event of a power outage, check your breaker panels before calling your power company. Check both the main breaker on the inside panel and outside disconnect (usually only found on newer homes) located close to your electric meter. If the breaker is tripped, it will be stopped halfway between "off" and "on." Turn the breaker off first and then back on to reset it. If you still have power in part of your home, check the individual breakers in the panel.
  • Avoid connecting a generator directly to your home's circuits or wiring. This must be done by a qualified, licensed electrician who will install a transfer switch that will keep the generator from feeding power back into Jackson EMC's lines. Otherwise the power crews working to restore your electric service could be put at risk. If your generator is still hooked up when the power is restored, your generator and your household electrical system may be damaged.
  • Appliances and electronics are extremely sensitive to electrical spikes from lightning or other faults. Before electrical storms, disconnect these items from the electrical source.
