Cooperative Solar

Imagine using solar energy at your home - without installing solar panels. With Jackson EMC's new Cooperative Solar program, members can benefit from receiving solar energy without the long-term commitment and risk of ownership or maintenance.

How the Program Works

With Cooperative Solar, you don’t have to worry about your home being shaded, restrictive homeowner association covenants, or being a renter. The electricity you receive is generated at off-site solar facilities. You can purchase solar energy blocks from Jackson EMC at a monthly rate.

When you purchase a solar energy block, you receive the electricity produced by approximately three solar panels. The monthly output from each solar energy block varies due to the sun's position, time of year, and the number of cloudy days. Therefore, you will receive different amounts of solar energy each month.

Cooperative Solar

Offsite Solar Energy Facilities

Jackson EMC co-owns off-site solar facilities with 37 other Georgia EMCs through Green Power EMC.

Jackson EMC

The off-site solar facilities generate clean, renewable energy and send it to the Jackson EMC power grid.

Residential Member

Cooperative Solar subscribers will receive energy credits on their bill while getting the benefits of solar energy. The amount of energy produced by your share of Cooperative Solar will offset the same amount of energy usage on your bill each month.

Pricing and Energy Production

The kilowatt-hours produced by your solar energy block in each calendar month will offset the same number of kilowatt-hours on your bill. If your solar energy block produces more kilowatt-hours than you use during your billing period, you will receive a credit for the excess. On average, each solar energy block is expected to produce approximately 200 - 225 kWh per month. For reference, the average Jackson EMC household uses 1,200 kilowatt-hours of electricity per month.

Solar energy blocks are $23 each per month. Residences served by Jackson EMC are eligible to sign up for Cooperative Solar.

Length of Commitment

There is no long-term commitment, and you may discontinue your solar energy commitment at any time. If you leave the program, you must wait a year to rejoin and Jackson EMC cannot guarantee there will be availability at that time.

Availability

Residences served by Jackson EMC are eligible to sign up for up to three blocks of solar electricity. Those members on Budget Billing, Time of Use, PrePay, Plug-In Electric Vehicle rate, and Net Metering are not eligible for Cooperative Solar at this time.

Sign Ups

Sign ups are on a first-come, first-served basis. To sign up, complete the Cooperative Solar enrollment form.

Billing

You will be billed $23 monthly for each block of solar electricity. You will be informed of any price change at least 30 days in advance.

FAQs

Each solar energy block will receive the electricity produced by approximately three solar panels at one of the off-site solar facilities co-owned with 37 other Georgia EMCs through Green Power EMC (currently Hazelhurst, Snipesville and Terrell) .

Each solar energy block costs $23 per 1 kilowatt (kW) block per month. There is a maximum of three blocks per residence.

Residential members served by Jackson EMC are eligible to sign up for up to three blocks. Members on Budget Billing, Time-of-Use, PrePay, Plug-In Electric Vehicle rate, and Net Metering are not eligible for Cooperative Solar.

The Cooperative Solar program is designed to offer members who may not wish to install solar at their residence an opportunity to participate in renewable energy options.

The monthly charge was also designed specifically so that Jackson EMC is neutral (i.e. no harm or benefit) and so that non-participating members are not subsidizing the program for those participating in Cooperative Solar. The cost is competitive with other community solar programs throughout our state.

Each solar energy block is expected to produce between 200 and 225 kilowatt-hours of solar electricity monthly. The monthly output from each solar energy block varies due to the sun's position, time of year, and the number of cloudy days. Therefore, you will receive different amounts of solar energy each month based on the available sunlight and the performance of the solar facility.

The program is designed to allow you to support solar through your monthly subscription, and is not intended to result in energy savings.

There is no long-term commitment, and you may discontinue your solar energy commitment at any time. If you leave the program, you must wait a year to rejoin and Jackson EMC cannot guarantee there will be availability at that time.

Your Jackson EMC bill will include a line item showing your monthly solar block fee and your share of the farms' solar generation (in kWh) during the month, which will offset your electric consumption based on your number of Cooperative Solar subscription blocks. Please note that your bill will still include charges for your remaining monthly energy usage, according to your existing residential rate.
