Distributed Generation Interconnection Procedure

Member-owned generation can take many forms, from small solar installations and emergency home generators to larger, parallel power systems.

Jackson EMC has requirements for member-owned generation to ensure the safety of our employees, customers and the public, and to safeguard the quality and reliability of our distribution system.  Jackson EMC’s requirements differ for emergency backup generators and for generation operated in parallel with Jackson EMC’s distribution system.

An emergency backup system operates in the event of an outage on the distribution system to maintain a member’s power supply.  Members who wish to connect an emergency generator must have a licensed electrician install a transfer switch, which will prevent backfeed of power onto Jackson EMC’s distribution system.

As long as no power is backfed onto Jackson EMC lines, no approval from Jackson EMC is necessary. If the transfer switch is closed (make before break) then Jackson EMC should be notified.

Other  generation systems can be installed in such a way that they merely offset power from the grid, known as parallel generation.  All members who wish to operate parallel generation are required to enter into a distributed generation interconnection agreement with Jackson EMC prior to operating their system.

Our Distributed Generation Interconnection Procedure includes an application, agreement and other supporting information and materials. All distributed generation systems must be approved by Jackson EMC prior to operation.  To start the approval process, review the below procedure and complete the attached application.  Return the application with a $100 processing fee via U.S. mail to:

Jackson EMC will notify you within three business days of receipt of your application, and within ten business days whether your application is complete or whether additional information is required prior to processing.  If the proposed generation is a Certified Inverter-based system no larger than 10 kW, it can qualify for our Fast Track Process.  Please refer to the procedure for additional details and information.
