Helping Turn Lives Around

So often when we communicate the work of the Jackson EMC Foundation, we speak in terms of numbers.

The Foundation was formed 13 years ago to manage funds raised through Operation Round Up®, Jackson EMC’s philanthropic program that enables members to round up their monthly power bill to the next dollar, with the donations supporting local charities and individuals in need. With almost 229,000 meters on Jackson EMC lines, the average annual donation of $6 per member goes a long way.

Since 2005, the Jackson EMC Foundation has awarded 1,307 grants totaling more than $12.2 million to nonprofit agencies that do important work in our communities.

Of that total, almost $4.6 million has gone to organizations that meet the most crucial needs. These particular agencies work to provide housing for the homeless and healing for the abused. Their leaders often tread where few dare to go as they strive to help turn lives around for alcoholics and drug abusers, former inmates and the mentally ill.

These organizations provide housing for the homeless—one at a time—as they work to get back on their feet. They help those fighting alcoholism and drug abuse gain freedom from addiction—one day at a time. They provide support services to people of various cultural backgrounds to serve them where they are, one at a time. They counsel mothers who have lost babies and adults who have lost their way, healing hearts and building character—one person at a time. With assistance from Jackson EMC members who donate through Operation Round Up, the Jackson EMC Foundation is helping change lives, one at a time.

Demonstrating our Concern for Community

Electric cooperatives, like Jackson EMC, adhere to Seven Cooperative Principles which form the framework of how they do business. The seventh of these principles is one they especially take to heart: Concern for Community.

This year’s annual report features nine organizations presented with grants in the past year. The work they do to better our communities reflects the amazing work of all the organizations funded by the Foundation. It’s something we all can be proud of—the Jackson EMC members who round up their power bill to help fund grants, and the Jackson EMC Foundation, which carefully researches grant requests to choose organizations with the most potential impact.

Together, Jackson EMC and the Jackson EMC Foundation pledge to continue supporting our local communities as we live out the Seventh Cooperative Principle by demonstrating our sincere and profound Concern for Community.

Impacting Youth - Our Leaders of Tomorrow

We take pride in all the work the Jackson EMC Foundation has accomplished, but we’ll admit it: We are most proud of the impact the Foundation has had on youth.

The impact is possible thanks to Jackson EMC members who participate in Operation Round Up® by rounding up their monthly power bills to the next dollar, with the extra pennies set aside for charity.

In this Annual Report for 2016, we visit eight organizations that positively impact the youth of Banks, Barrow, Clarke, Franklin, Gwinnett, Hall, Jackson, Lumpkin, Madison and Oglethorpe counties. It is our honor and privilege to support them.

Celebrating 10 years and $10 million back to Northeast Georgia.

In terms of impact, what Jackson EMC members have accomplished in the past decade is amazing. Because of their generosity, thousands upon thousands have been helped—the sick have been treated, the homeless have been sheltered, the hungry have been fed.

In celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Jackson EMC Foundation, we wish to share the impact just a few of our grant recipients have had in our communities. We’ve selected 10 organizations that received grants during the Foundation’s first year of operation.

Changing Communities for the Better

How many times have you thought, “I’d like to help, but I’m only one person – how much difference can I make?” We are, after all, only individuals; most of us are just average middle class working folks. How can just one ordinary person affect the lives of others?

One way is through the Jackson EMC Foundation.
