Jackson EMC's Elke Yath (left) and Monica Jackson read to students at Benton Elementary School.
Each of Jackson EMC’s four district offices participate in Partners in Education (PIE), but the Jefferson district employees also take part in reading programs at Benton Elementary School in Nicholson, Ga.
From January to March, employees go to the school in one hour increments to read, or listen to students read, spending quality time interacting with the students.
“Knowing the importance of reading, employees participate in several reading programs at the elementary school like Dr. Seuss Day, Pen Pals and Read Across America Day, to name a few,” says Janet Davis, Jefferson district communications coordinator. “We’re very proud of the relationship we have with the local school systems.”
Davis organizes the readers and added, “It’s gratifying to see such young kids already having an interest in reading. Some even say that they want to become teachers when they grow up.”
