Your meter is about to get smarter with the implementation of Jackson EMC's Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) to monitor your home's energy usage remotely. Your current meter only measures energy usage. That's about to change.

The Smart Meter goes beyond the basics of monitoring, allowing us to offer you a variety of new and future benefits to better serve you.

New Benefits

• Remote reading helps protect the environment by reducing the number of vehicles on
  the road.
• Remote access gives us the ability to check your meter for service issues to ensure it's
  working properly.
• Smart meters reduce electricity theft because of sensors notifying us if someone tampers
  with a meter.
• The time required to start and stop power service is reduced.
  

Future Benefits

• Hourly energy usage information available online to allow you to monitor your home's
  energy use.
• Members can participate in load management through the remote system.
• Power outage notification will remotely alert us that your power is out.

The build-out process will take three years. By 2012, we plan to have more than 200,000 meters upgraded to the Smart Meter. There's no additional charge or fee associated with resetting your new Smart Meter. In fact, you don't have to be at home. If you're at home, you may notice a brief interruption of power, which shouldn't last more than a few minutes. We'll notify you by mail in advance and leave a note on your door once your meter is reset.

There may be rare occasions when resetting a meter uncovers issues that require an electrician's attention. Members will be notified of the necessary arrangements required to repair these issues. Of course, some issues won't be discovered until the meter is changed, and we'll notify members as soon as a problem is discovered.

By the first of the year, we'll introduce Smart Meter to a small group of members before the big launch. Installations will start in sections throughout our service territory until all meters are replaced. Remember, you'll receive a letter prior to installation.
