High anxiety and intense concentration set the atmosphere of the 2005 Energy Bowl.

2005 Energy Bowl Winner Marek Fikejz

With an unprecedented two tiebreakers required in the competition, Johnson High School's Marek Fikejz seized the winning title.

In addition to bragging rights, Fikejz walked away with an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., a $1,000 scholarship, a Palm Zire handheld organizer and Office Depot gift card. Johnson High School will also receive a $1,000 school grant for Fikejz's accomplishment.

"I'm in shock. I can't believe I won, and I am truly grateful," says Fikejz. Fikejz's shock was the highlight of the evening. In the last tiebreaker, two students competed for the runner-up's position; however, Fikejz thought they were competing for winner and runner-up. When the overall winner was announced, Fikejz's reaction was priceless. "Imagine thinking you've placed in the top five, which I was happy about, and then learning you're the winner? I can't describe what that feels like."

Fourteen students competed in the first two rounds of short answers before the five highest scorers moved on to the fast-fingered buzzer round. To get the five finalists, a tiebreaker was required, followed by a final tiebreaker for runner-up. Each participant received an Office Depot gift card, and finalists received Palm Zire handheld organizers.

The Energy Bowl winner serves as Jackson EMC's delegate on the Washington Youth Tour. The winner of the upcoming Youth Citizenship Award will serve as the cooperative's second delegate.
