Transforming the World One Child at a Time

In our fast-paced culture, children face major issues at earlier ages. Through weekly mentoring programs, Diamond in the Rough (DITR) helps girls ages 10 to 18 make good decisions about their lives.

"If we can reach them as young as fourth grade and build their self-esteem and leadership skills, they are better equipped to make wiser decisions when they transition to high school," explained DITR Executive Director Nicole Steele.

Steele works with parents, schools, churches and community organizations to help empower girls and overcome negative messages and images prevalent in television and other popular media. "We have a responsibility as a community," she said. "They are our future leaders."

Trained mentors provide a positive role model for program participants in a safe environment that encourages the girls to share and learn. In addition to leadership skills, the mentoring curriculum addresses self-image, health and fitness, personal finance, stewardship and community service.

DITR will use a $12,000 Operation Round Up® grant to recruit and train volunteers, pay for program activities and provide membership opportunities for participants. To learn more about DITR, visit their Web site at www.ditr.org or call 678-376-9676.
