The Power of Green

Now entering its third year at Jackson EMC, Green Power continues to offer a variety of energy efficiency and conservation options.

Harvesting electricity from two landfill sites and one low-impact hydro plant, Green Power is the first renewable energy program offered to residential members through Green Power EMC.

How Biomass Works

Landfill gas is extracted from the landfill site, processed to remove moisture and particulate matter and used as fuel to generate power. The power produced is supplied to the utility distribution system. Landfill gas is produced in all landfills as waste decomposes. At many landfills, the gas is burned off. Our site uses the gas to produce electricity rather than waste the gas. Converting landfill gas to energy offsets the need for non-renewable resources such as coal and oil, and reduces emissions of air pollutants that contribute to smog and acid rain.

How Hydro Plants Work

Moving water turns turbines that generate electricity. Hydropower depends on the movement of water from areas of higher elevation to areas of lower elevation. As water evaporates from bodies of water at lower elevations, it's collected in clouds in the atmosphere. Tallassee Shoals plant is a low-impact hydroelectric site. Water flowing down the river is diverted through the turbine to produce electricity. Unlike larger bodies of water such as Buford Dam or Lake Lanier which can generate power on demand because of the large reservoir, the power generated at Tallassee Shoals depends on the flow of the river. Tallassee Shoals produces more electricity when it rains and less during hot, dry months.

Easy Sign Up, Low-Cost

When you subscribe to Green Power, you'll pay an extra $4.50 a month on your electric bill for a 150-kWh block of Green Power. You can sign up online. Green Power EMC's three projects have generated more than 1,000,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity to date.

Green Power Mission Statement

The mission of Green Power EMC, a nonprofit corporation, is to facilitate procurement and marketing of electricity from cleaner, greener Georgia sources, add it to the member-cooperative's power mix, and build member-owner loyalty by generating awareness about our environmental product offerings and services.
