By setting your thermostat back a few degrees,
you can save up to $70 on your winter heating bill.
Controlling your thermostat is one of the most economical ways to control energy costs. Recommended heating settings are 68 degrees F or lower. Setting your thermostat a few degrees back when you're away from home will also save you money. When you're away, try setting your thermostat to 55 degrees F. Don't believe the myth that it costs more to heat a home up after a setback. Be sure not to set your thermostat too high to reheat your home. Setting the thermostat at 68 degrees F will reheat the home to a comfortable environment.
Purchase or install a setback or programmable thermostat to make control of the thermostat easier. A programmable thermostat allows you to set the temperature of the house for different times or days and then leave the thermostat alone for the rest of the heating or cooling season.
If you have a heat pump, you should review the manufacturer's specifications before purchasing a programmable thermostat. An improperly used or mismatched setback thermostat can actually increase heat pump operating costs by increasing reliance on the more expensive backup heating elements. Most manufacturers now offer programmable thermostats specifically designed for heat pumps.
