Congratulations to our winners of the Earth Day Celebration video contest!
Peter and Miranda Chave of Lawrenceville were selected as the winners of the grand prize, an EnerWorks solar hot water heating system installed by Correct Solar Installation and Solar Energy Marketing. Runners up included first runner up Paula Mellom of Athens and second runner up Robert Schlect of Hoschton.
"Our panel of judges chose the Chaves's submission because they clearly demonstrated both their commitment and enthusiasm for green living," said Christy Queen, Jackson EMC marketing resource specialist. "Their video showed numerous simple things anyone can do to be more environmentally responsible, and then they took it a step further with their application of innovative energy technology." Following a site survey to confirm the suitability of the location for a successful installation, the system was installed on June 4, 2009.

How Solar Water Heaters Work
Here’s how it works. A closed loop system utilizes an antifreeze transfer solution circulating through a collector to a heat exchanger. The solution being circulated is a non-toxic, food grade antifreeze (propylene glycol) mixed with distilled water. It protects the piping system from damage that may occur due to extreme cold temperatures. The loop includes a collector, connecting piping, a pump, an expansion tank and a heat exchanger. As the solution moves through the collector, it gathers heat and is circulated through the pipes to the heat exchanger. The heat exchanger then transfers heat from the circulating solution to potable water in the storage tank for use in your home.
