Applying solar control window film can significantly reduce heat gain from the sun. It also filters out ultraviolet rays that cause fabrics and art to fade. Homeowners are eligible for a federal tax credit of 10 percent of the cost of installing solar control film, up to a maximum credit of $500. The tax credits end December 31, 2007.
The film can increase comfort, particularly in rooms with large expanses of windows, and reduce glare. The film also reduces the amount of sunlight coming in.
Some of the films must be professionally installed, but there are also do-it-yourself versions available at home improvement stores. Installing it yourself without wrinkles or bubbles can be challenging, particularly on larger windows.
Manufacturers report that the average homeowner in this area could save up to $90 a year on cooling costs. The savings would be less on homes with windows with low-E coating, which already have similar heat-control properties.
