Cooperative Principles in Action

The cooperative way of doing business is guided by these principles and helps ensure a certain level of customer service that separates us from the rest.

Seven Cooperative Principles

1. Voluntary and Open Membership - Cooperatives are voluntary organizations open to all persons able to use their services.

2. Democratic Member Control - Cooperatives are democratic organizations controlled by members. Members participate in setting policies and making decisions. Elected representatives are accountable to the membership.

3. Members' Economic Participation - One way Jackson EMC promotes economic participation is through margin refund checks mailed to members. Revenues are refunded for a combination of years so both older and newer members benefit from membership in the cooperative.

4. Autonomy and Independence - Cooperatives are independent organizations controlled by their members.

5. Education, Training and Information - Cooperatives provide education and training for their members, board members, managers and employees so they can contribute to the development of their cooperatives. Information about the cooperative is provided through Jackson EMC's Web site, newsletters and brochures. Whenever possible, coupons are offered to offset the cost of seminars and community activities that may offer a benefit to members, like the home shows.

6. Cooperation Among Cooperatives - Cooperatives best serve members by working together through local, regional, national and international organizations. Jackson EMC has strong ties with EMCs throughout the state, and we work collectively with other organizations on all levels.

7. Concern for Community - Cooperatives work to develop their communities through policies accepted by their members. At Jackson EMC, we believe in good corporate citizenship. Our employees work and live in the communities we serve, and we support community and civic organizations on behalf of our membership.
