Southface Energy Institute uses the house design to determine the heat pump size and the amount of airflow each room requires for comfort.
Southface technicians conduct high-tech tests on each Right Choice home:
- Duct Blaster – Leaky ducts are major contributors to air leakage in a house and contribute to poor air quality. The duct blaster pressurizes the duct system to find major leaks.
- Blower Door Test – Blower doors test for air leakage in the entire home by using a large blower to force air outside of the house. The tighter the house, the less air pressure it takes to reduce the home's internal pressure.
- E-Scan – The e-Scan test measures airflow in each room while the heating and cooling system is operating and sends the information wirelessly to a laptop computer. Then sophisticated software analyzes the overall performance of the system. The e-Scan test confirms that each room receives enough airflow to ensure comfort, based on Southface's initial analysis of the house plans. This helps ensure comfort even in rooms that frequently have heating and cooling problems, such as bonus rooms and sunrooms.
- During construction, Southface technicians inspect homes for proper insulation, air sealing and duct system design.
