Preparing Your Landscape for Drought

With Georgia’s reservoirs at record lows, watering restrictions are going to be a way of life for some time. There are things you can do now to help your plants survive with limited water.

Mulch

  • Mulch conserves soil moisture and keeps away water-stealing weeds. Recommended mulches include two- to four-inch layers of pine straw, bark nuggets, ground wood chips, grass clippings or shredded leaves.
  • Mulch trees to the tips of their branches.
  • Keep mulch six inches from the bases of trees and shrubs.

Condition the Soil

Organic matter helps hold water and keeps Georgia’s red clay from turning brick-like. Dig compost or soil conditioner into your flower and vegetable beds. Some counties offer free or low-cost compost to their residents.

Get a Rain Barrel

Be sure to look for a barrel or barrel plans that have an overflow valve at the top and screens to keep mosquitoes out.
