For Immediate Release
November 13, 2006
Jefferson, Ga.
 — Luke Maloney, a junior at North Hall High School, won an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. by placing first in the November 9th Energy Bowl Challenge.

Hosted by Jackson Electric Membership Corporation (EMC), the academic quiz bowl tests area high school students in science and energy-related questions. Maloney competed against students from 15 other high schools.

In rounds one and two of the competition, students use a short answer format, and participants with the five highest scores move on to the final round, which uses a buzzer system. Maloney excelled during the competition, and proved that he was strong competitor in the bowl.

Placing first, Maloney won a Best Buy gift card, Palm Zire Handheld Organizer, a $1,000 scholarship and an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the 2007 Washington Youth Tour. North Hall High School also benefited from his achievement, receiving a $1,000 school grant.

Each year, the Energy Bowl attracts a number of outstanding students, and we are honored to play a role in this event, said Randall Pugh, President/CEO of Jackson EMC. We are committed to supporting educational and science-related programs within Jackson EMC communities.

An honorable mention to the other finalists who competed in Round three for the prestigious title: Athena Lao, first runner-up, Clarke Central; Justin Coleman, Winder-Barrow High School; Stephanie Davies, Chestatee High School; and Daryan Rachimzadeh, Grayson High School. All finalists received a Best Buy gift card and Palm Zire Handheld Organizer.

Jackson EMC will also select a second Washington Youth Tour delegate in April through the Youth Citizenship Award program. The winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship, an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. and a $1,000 grant to the civic organization of their choice. There are several scholastic and community involvement requirements that must be met. Applications may be obtained from the student's high-school guidance counselor or through the Web site. The deadline for applications is February 23, 2007.
