Heat Pumps - Don't Believe the Myths

FALSE! "Natural Gas is Warmer."

The average heat pump air supply temperature is 90°F. However, the normal body temperature is 98.6°F. An electric heat pump maintaining 75 or so degree space temperature is evenly heating the room. Gas heat feels warmer as a general rule because gas heating systems produce a supply air temperature of about 120°F. This makes it feel warmer against the skin if you stand near a vent; however, the space temperature is no warmer than that of an electric heat pump.

FALSE! "Natural Gas is Cheaper."

Heat pumps have high HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor) and SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) ratings, which measure the efficiencies of heating and cooling, respectively. Energy costs for a building may be significantly less when a heat pump system is used.

Why It's So Efficient

Transferring heat takes less energy than producing heat, making it energy-efficient. You can save valuable energy dollars with a heat pump. It can cost 25 to 50% less to run a heat pump than an electric resistance heating system.
