West Hall High School Student Wins Citizenship Award

For Immediate Release March 8, 2004 Jefferson, Ga.— Katie Sheppard became the first Youth Citizenship Award recipient, winning a $500 scholarship, a $1,000 grant to donate to the civic organization of her choice and an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C.<

Created by Jackson Electric Membership Corporation, the Youth Citizenship Award recognizes a student committed to improving the community.

"Student volunteers make a tremendous impact in the community, and we are proud to establish a program honoring those who acknowledge citizenship at a young age," said Randall Pugh, president/CEO, Jackson EMC.

Sheppard, a junior at West Hall High School, performed more than 400 hours of community service during her high school years. Her volunteer activities included helping at a local hospital, mentoring underprivileged children at a sports camp and working with organizations such as the Girl Scouts, United Way, Special Olympics and 4-H.

Forty-three students applied for the award by listing their community service activities and answering short answer questions. Each student also submitted a letter of recommendation from a club sponsor.

One of five finalists, Sheppard interviewed with a panel of community leaders to describe the lessons she learned from volunteering.

In addition to receiving the Youth Citizenship Award title, Sheppard will be one of two Jackson EMC delegates for the Washington Youth Tour. This weeklong trip to Washington, D.C. teaches students from across the nation about leadership and civic duty.

High school juniors and seniors who attend a school in Jackson EMC's service territory may apply for the Youth Citizenship Award. For more information about next year's competition, please visit www.jacksonemc.com/community/citizenship.html.
