Competition to enter some of the top colleges and universities in the country is getting more and more aggressive.

With students excelling in scholastics, community and extracurricular activities, the push to make college applications stand out from the rest is vital. You can help bring your college application to life by participating in the 2003 Energy Bowl — competing with the best and brightest high school juniors in the area.

The Energy Bowl is designed similar to most academic bowls, testing students' knowledge of electricity, energy, science and environment. Although the competition is fast-paced, it's also a lot of fun. Energy Bowl 2003 will be held Thursday, November 13 at the Jefferson office of Jackson EMC. High school juniors will compete for a $500 scholarship to a college, university or technical school of their choice, a $1,000 educational grant for their high school and an all-expense paid trip to our nation's capital.

Participants must be 11th grade students with a desire to learn more about electricity, energy, science and environment.

•   Students must complete an official application and have at least one recommendation letter from a school official or community leader.

• Application and letters of recommendation are due at Jackson EMC corporate offices in Jefferson no later than 4 p.m., Thursday, October 23.
• Many students from a high school may apply; however, only one student from each high school will be selected to participate. If more than one student applies from a school, selection will be based on GPA, leadership and community involvement. If selected, a study packet will be sent to the contestant's high school. Contestants will have two weeks to study the packet in preparation for Energy Bowl 2003.
