Leaks in your heating and air conditioning system ducts can account for as much as 30 percent of your home's air heating and cooling loss.
Why do ducts leak? Many modern flexible ducts can be damaged by sharp objects. Duct damage can occur when workers accidentally come in contact with ductwork. If not sealed properly, joints where two pieces of duct come together may separate over time. Duct system performance deteriorates faster if they're not properly installed with sufficient support.
If your ducts have leaks, outside air from your crawlspace or attic enters your duct system, which then distributes moisture, mold, dust and insulation fibers throughout your home. At the same time, heated or cooled air escapes, reducing your system's efficiency. Uninsulated ducts in unconditioned spaces and poor duct system design also reduces the efficiency of your heating and air conditioning system.
What are the symptoms of leaking ducts?
- Higher energy bills than expected
- Poor indoor air quality, possibly resulting in allergies or asthma attacks
- Uneven temperatures in different parts of the house
- Excessive dust
Duct repair should usually be left to professionals. If you do want to try to fix obvious problems, such as a duct that has separated at a seam, visible holes or unsealed joints, use silicone caulking or a mastic-type sealant.
You can help your duct system to work as designed. Duct systems only work properly if air can circulate to the return air plenums. Don't block returns with furniture and make sure that air can circulate under closed doors. Also, replace or clean filters monthly or as recommended by the manufacturer.
To pinpoint the source of high energy bills and poor indoor air quality, schedule a Right Choice™ High Tech Audit. A Right Choice audit can help you find any duct problems and make sure that they've been repaired correctly. For more information, call 800-462-3691.
