Fowler will represent Clarke County on Jackson EMC Foundation board

Johnny C. Fowler, an Athens/Clarke County retiree, has been appointed to the board of directors of the Jackson EMC Foundation. Fowler succeeds The Very Reverend Mandy Brady, who recently moved from Athens.

The Jackson EMC Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization set up to represent the members of Jackson EMC and distribute money collected from participating members through Operation Round Up. The 11-member volunteer Foundation board of directors meets regularly to review and select grant applications for worthwhile, charitable purposes that will improve lives and respond to immediate needs within the 10 counties where Jackson EMC provides electric service.

After receiving his Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the University of Georgia, Fowler worked in accounting for most of his life, retiring from Athens-Clarke County where he served as city clerk, treasurer and budget officer. He continues doing auditing for the county as an independent contractor, and has served on the board of the Tax Assessors of Clarke County since 1991.

In addition to his accounting career, Fowler plays an active role in area community activities, serving as chair of the Athens Convention and Visitors Bureau, organizer and member of the Clarke County Crime Stoppers Board, as well as serving for many years on the board of the United Way of Northeast Georgia, where he is now chair of Planned Giving and member of the Trustees of Endowment.

He is also very active in the Athens religious community, serving since 2002 on the advisory board of the Lanier Gardens-Talmadge Terrace Retirement Community, a Methodist Church facility; director of several senior groups at Chapelwood United Methodist Church; and co-chair of the host committee of the Methodist Conference, which meets annually as the largest conference held at Athens’ Classic Center.

Fowler has been married to wife Betty for 45 years, and the couple has three children and four grandchildren.
