Jackson EMC is participating in a Broadband Technology pilot.
Broadband over Powerline (BPL) sends radio frequency energy over power lines to provide high-speed Internet capability. This process is called "coupling" where the Internet frequency is coupled with the power line frequency. We've joined in a pilot program with two other EMCs in Georgia to evaluate BPL potential.
"With this pilot program, we're testing BPL technology's reliability, limitations and the feasibility of providing this service to our members," says Roy Stowe, Jackson EMC Marketing/Member Services division manager. "Broadband technology isn't new; however, broadband over power line remains in the testing stages. One of the benefits of BPL is that the infrastructure is already in place, reducing start-up costs. Also, power lines present the opportunity to reach more people, even in more rural areas where high-speed Internet access is limited." Jackson EMC is testing a small residential area and retirement facility in Jefferson. The pilot will last approximately one year.
Testing new technology isn't uncommon at Jackson EMC. The cooperative is always looking for opportunities to enhance our membership benefits.
