How To Read Your Residential Electric Bill

Residential Bill The balance on your account, along with any past due amounts or late fees. The date the current electric charges are due by, usually about 20 days after the Bill Date on your statement. Charges for the current month's service.  Tear off the detachable Payment Coupon and mail with your payment. Be sure the Jackson EMC address shows in the return envelope window. Important messages, reminders and offers appear here. If you've signed up Budget Billing, this section shows your Actual Bill and Budget Bill Amount. A comparison of the electricity used at your home, showing the number of days in the month, the kilowatt hours used and the cost of the combination of electricity and Wholesale Power Cost Adjustment for the current month, the previous month and the same month in the previous year. This area shows detailed account activity, including charges for services such as Outdoor Lights and EMC Security. Wholesale Power Cost Adjustment - This amount is added to (Charge) or subtracted from (Credit) your bill, based on the changes in the cost of wholesale power, including the cost of fuel used to generate electricity. It is based on charges Jackson EMC incurs from its wholesale power suppliers. The physical location of your account. This service period is determined by the date your meter is read. The amount of kilowatt hours used by your home between the last billing date and this billing date. A method of measuring electrical use in situations, such as very large homes or commercial/industrial facilities, where the demand for electricity exceeds a normal meter's measuring capacity. The reading obtained monthly by the Jackson EMC field service representative from the meter at your home, one for last month's reading and the other for the present month. The eight-digit number on the face of your electric meter. There is a meter at each residence and each has a unique number. A description of the type of service provided to your location. The Bill Date is the date in our billing cycle that your current bill was generated. Next Bill Date is the date that your next bill will be generated, as well as the date that late charges will be added for any unpaid charges from your current bill. Cycle is one of our 16 billing cycles. Route is the number assigned to a group of meters on the same billing cycle. Sequence is the order of the meter within that route. A number assigned by Jackson EMC for each new electric service established. The first account you set up will end with -01. Each additional account that is established in the same account name will end with the digits -02, -03, etc. (for example, if you moved within Jackson EMC's service area.)

Current Charges — Charges for the current month's service.

Due Date — The date the current electric charges are due by, usually about 20 days after the Bill Date on your statement.

Total Due — The balance on your account, along with any past due amounts or late fees. If such charges make your account subject to disconnection, a Notice of Intent to Disconnect will be mailed to you advising you of the date those charges must be paid. On the day after that date, your service can be disconnected, even if it is before the regular due date for your current month's bill.

Account Number — A number assigned by Jackson EMC for each new electric service established.

Cycle-Route-Seq — Cycle is one of our 16 billing cycles. Route is the number assigned to a group of meters on the same billing cycle. Sequence is the order of the meter within that route.

Bill Date/Next Bill Date — The Bill Date is the date in our billing cycle that your current bill was generated. Next Bill Date is the date that your next bill will be generated.

Rate A description of the type of service provided to your location.

Meter Number — The eight-digit number on the face of your electric meter. There is a meter at each residence and each has a unique number.

Previous Reading/Present Reading — The reading obtained monthly by the Jackson EMC field service representative from the meter at your home, one for last month's reading and the other for the present month.

Meter Multiplier A method of measuring electrical use in situations, such as very large homes or commercial/industrial facilities, where the demand for electricity exceeds a normal meter's measuring capacity.

KWh Usage — The amount of kilowatt hours used by your home between the last billing date and this billing date.

Service From/Service To — This service period is determined by the date your meter is read.

Wholesale Power Cost Adjustment — This amount is added to (Charge) or subtracted from (Credit) your bill, based on the changes in the cost of wholesale power, including the cost of fuel used to generate electricity. It is based on charges Jackson EMC incurs from its wholesale power suppliers.

Service Address The physical location of your account.

Account Activity — This area shows detailed account activity, including charges for services such as Outdoor Lights and EMC Security. It includes:

  • Current Balance — Total charges and payments for your account from the last billing period to the current billing period, including any late payment charges.
  • Electric Metered Service — Charges for the kilowatt hours of electricity used at your home as measured by your meter.
  • Sales Tax The Georgia State Sales Tax calculated for the amount of electricity used at your home.
  • Operation Round Up Donation to Operation Round Up

Energy Usage Comparisons — A comparison of the electricity used at your home, showing the number of days in the month, the kilowatt hours used and the cost of the combination of electricity and Wholesale Power Cost Adjustment for the current month and the previous month. These comparisons will help you track your electric use and may help you identify energy efficiency problems (for example, high bills in months when the weather was not exceptionally hot or cold).
