Parents often say their teenagers are know-it-alls. You can put their brainpower to the test by encouraging your 11th grader to participate in the Jackson EMC Energy Bowl. The lucky winner will walk away with scholarship money, prizes and know-it-all validation.

Jackson EMC’s 17th Energy Bowl competition is Thursday, November 19, at the Jackson EMC office in Jefferson. The winner earns an all-expense paid trip to the 2010 Washington Youth Tour, a $2,000 scholarship, a $1,000 school grant and other prizes.

Energy Bowl is a fun, good-natured, competitive “Jeopardy-like” event designed to showcase students’ knowledge in math and science.

Applications and recommendation letters are due at the Jackson EMC corporate office in Jefferson no later than 5 p.m., Monday, November 2. Interested participants should contact their high school counselors or download an application.

A study packet will be mailed to the selected contestants’ high schools, allowing students two weeks to prepare for competition. For questions or to request a mailed application, please contact Kay Parks by e-mail at kparks@jacksonemc.com.

Applying for Energy Bowl?

• Participants must be 11th grade students.
• Complete an official application and have at least one recommendation letter from a school official or community leader.
• Application and recommendation letters are due at Jackson EMC corporate offices in Jefferson no later than 5 p.m., Monday, November 2.
• Several students from a high school may apply; however, only one student from each high school will be selected to participate. If more than one student applies from a school, selection will be based on GPA, leadership and community involvement. A study packet will be sent to each selected contestant’s high school. Contestants will have two weeks to study the packet in preparation for Energy Bowl 2009. (Additional subjects not included in the study packet will also be in the competition.)
