Hall County Schools Save Thousands with Energy Conservation Program

Hall County schools has avoided nearly $1 million in electric costs through their active energy awareness program. Like most school systems, Hall County is on the Load Management rate, a lower rate that benefits customers who can reduce their electric load during peak demand times. In the fall of 2005, Jackson EMC celebrated with the three Hall County schools. North Hall High School, Sardis Elementary and West Hall Middle School, that saved the most energy.

"We have fun with our energy awareness program, and make it a friendly competition between schools. Since we started nearly seven years ago, we've saved over $5 million on combined utilities. That's money that can be redirected to where it's needed," says Larry West, Hall County Schools' energy manager. "Our competition is entitled, 'SHUT DOWN,' and the schools with the best shut downs during holidays, summer break, daily and weekend audit times get the rewards."

West monitors and audits Hall County's 34 schools on a regular basis. Some violations include computer monitors left on overnight and lights, copiers and printers not switched off. Violators receive an "Oops" message, while others receive the, "You're an Energy Star, thanks for your conservation," sticker. "Across the board, we are making a difference and doing everything we can to save. As energy costs rise, we do our best to be energy stewards and save wherever we can."

Energy reports are given at monthly staff meetings with administration so each school knows where it stands in the competition.

Jackson EMC recognizes the schools by providing a breakfast or lunch for the top Shut Down performers in the elementary, middle and high school categories.

West says Jackson EMC's support helps the program because it encourages teachers and staff to save energy dollars. "Each school vies for the Shut Down championship sign that hangs in front of the school. We appreciate Jackson EMC's continued support and assistance with our energy program competition," West says.
