Energy Bowl

Each year, Jackson EMC sponsors the Energy Bowl, a quiz bowl designed to promote math and science skills among high school students.

Jackson EMC started the Energy Bowl in 1993 to select a delegate for the Washington D.C. Youth Tour, an event that provides over 1,000 students from across the United States with the experience of a lifetime. The other delegate is the winner of the Youth Citizenship Award. The Energy Bowl is held each fall at the Jefferson District Office of Jackson EMC.

Along with an all-expense paid trip to our nation's capital, the winning student receives a $2,000 scholarship to the college, university or technical school of his or her choice. The high school the winning student attends benefits as well. Jackson EMC rewards the winning student's school with a $1,000 educational grant to be used in a way the student and school agree upon. School officials will make the final decision.

2007 Energy Bowl Fast Facts

The application deadline is Thursday, October 25, 2007.
The 2007 Energy Bowl will be held in Jefferson at  Jackson EMC’s auditorium on Thursday, November 8, 2007.

Requirements for Participation

Participants must be 11th grade students with a desire to learn more about electricity, energy, science and the environment. Along with the official application, the participating students must have at least one recommendation letter from a school official or community leader.

Even though many students from a high school may apply, only one participant from each school is selected. This assures equal representation among schools. If more than one student applies from a school, selection is based on GPA, leadership and community involvement.

How to Prepare for the Energy Bowl

Questions are in the areas of basic physical, chemical and biological sciences as well as electricity, energy production and the environment.

Once participants have been selected, a study packet is sent directly to the student. It includes information about electricity, energy production and the environment, but not about the physical, chemical and biological sciences.

Students who have excelled in 9th and 10th grade sciences and who have studied the provided information should have the necessary information to compete successfully at the Energy Bowl.

At the event, Jackson EMC provides all the necessary supplies for the student. Students are asked questions in an academic bowl fashion and earn points for answering correctly. Students who earn the most points move on to the competition's final rounds, and the winner is announced after the judges tally the scores.

Interested participants should contact their high school counselor or download an application online. The application deadline is Thursday, October 25, 2007. Students must attend one of the high schools in Jackson EMC's service area. A study packet will be mailed directly to the contestants, allowing students two weeks to prepare for competition. The 2007 Jackson EMC Energy Bowl is scheduled for  Thursday, November 8th. For questions or to request a mailed application, please contact Kay Parks at 706-367-6122 or by email at kparks@jacksonemc.com.
