The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) presented Jackson EMC with the "Building for the Future Award" at the NRECA Annual Meeting in New Orleans.

Competing against electric cooperatives from all over the U.S., Jackson EMC's submission garnered one of five community rervice awards under in the Best Youth Program category.
The Electric Vehicle (EV) program began when Jackson County High School students came to Jackson EMC seeking support in building an electric vehicle. Jackson EMC agreed to support the project financially and through employee involvement; however, no one had any idea that this class project would later become an EV program, and part of the curriculum in 32 high schools throughout the state and 40 across the nation.
Alan Shedd, commercial/industrial engineer at Jackson EMC, has been involved with the EV program from the onset and very instrumental in promoting the program to other cooperatives and high schools. Shedd says the
real recognition goes to the students, teachers and everyone involved to make the program a success. "The most rewarding part of receiving this award is that students and teachers who go beyond regular classroom or working hours to put the time and effort into making this program work are receiving much deserved recognition," says Shedd.
Developing skills like teamwork, marketing, research and fundraising, the EV program provides a unique and diverse skill set to students. Addressing transportation alternatives, energy-efficient living and problem solving, the program allows students to have fun while bringing abstract textbook concepts alive, Shedd says. "I'm not saying there aren't any nail-biting moments, but I can guarantee that no one can drive an electric vehicle and keep a straight face. It's just plain fun, and the students love it."
In addition to being recognized at the awards banquet, Jackson EMC and EV program coordinators will be featured in a video presentation detailing the history of the program. The EV program also will receive a National Community Service Award seal.
