Child Safety

Protect children from electrical dangers.

Electrical Outlets

More than a thousand children are treated in hospitals each year for injuries that occur when they insert metal objects such as keys into the outlet, resulting in electric shock or burn injuries to the hand or finger.

Plastic outlet protectors fit into the outlet holes, preventing the insertion of foreign objects, but can be foiled by curious toddlers. A more secure option is electrical outlets designed to remain closed until a plug is inserted and electrical outlet receptacle covers that have faces that swivel or slide over the outlet holes.

Electric Cords

If a cord doesn't have safety closures, cover unused outlets with electrical tape or plastic caps to prevent a child from coming in contact with the live circuit, in addition to covering empty electrical outlets with protective plastic caps.

Toddlers have been known to strangle themselves in loose cords and to be seriously burned or electrocuted from chewing on cords. Keep children away from loose electrical cords.

Flying

  • Fly kites in open areas, away from power lines and busy streets.
  • When flying your kite, make sure you use a dry, non-metallic string.
  • If a kite gets snagged in a tree or power line, don't try to pull it loose or climb up after it; call Jackson EMC instead.

Stay away from substation fences, utility poles or electrical equipment. Substations are fenced and the gates are locked because the high-voltage equipment inside is very dangerous. If your child accidentally throws a ball or something else into a substation, please call us and we will rescue it for you.

Climbing Trees

Never climb a tree when there are electrical wires near it.
